Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder
Persistent genital arousal disorder, otherwise known as PGAD, is a condition in women that causes an uncomfortable sensation of arousal without intentional stimulation. The feeling does not always subside after orgasm and one orgasm may trigger the need for more. The symptoms may strike at any time of day and are not indicative of actual sexual desire. The arousal PGAD causes is typically most intense when there is some form of pressure in the genital area, which may result from wearing tight clothing, activities such as bike riding or sitting for a period of time. Patients with PGAD do not experience pleasure from this arousal. Instead, it may be associated with pain or an urge to urinate.
Causes of PGAD
PGAD does not have a specific cause, but it is believed that a sensory nerve problem or a spinal cyst may be a factor in many cases. In addition, the following factors may contribute to persistent genital arousal disorder:
- Injury to the pelvic area
- Prior genital infections
- Periods of hormonal change
- Stress
- Certain medications
Patients who develop this condition are often menopausal, but it can strike younger women as well.
Treatment for PGAD
While there is no specific cure for PGAD, anti-seizure medications and nerve stimulation therapy can be effective forms of treatment for many patients. In addition some patients find a decrease in symptoms after undergoing psychotherapy and counseling.
